With IPL 2025 set to kick off on March 22 at Eden Gardens, most teams have finalized their captains and are making final squad adjustments. However, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Capitals are yet to announce their captains, leaving fans eagerly speculating about who will take charge.
KKR and Delhi’s Captaincy Still Uncertain
Last season, Shreyas Iyer led KKR, while Rishabh Pant captained Delhi. However, both players were not retained by their respective franchises. Meanwhile, KL Rahul has also parted ways with Lucknow Super Giants, with Pant now taking over as LSG’s captain in a high-profile move.
Despite these shifts, KKR and Delhi remain undecided on their leadership choices, creating anticipation around their final decisions.
Delhi Capitals Keeping Their Options Open
Delhi Capitals have been secretive about their captaincy plans, with head coach Hemang Badani refusing to disclose any details. Given this secrecy, fans and analysts are left wondering whether the team will opt for an experienced leader or back a young star to step up.
Venkatesh Iyer Among Top Contenders for KKR Captaincy
For KKR, all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer is one of the frontrunners for the captaincy. The franchise bought him back for a whopping ₹237.5 million (₹23.75 crore) at the auction, indicating their confidence in his abilities.
Another possible candidate is former India captain Ajinkya Rahane, while international options include ex-South Africa skipper Quinton de Kock, along with KKR stalwarts Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. However, Iyer’s recent statements suggest he is more than ready for the challenge.
Venkatesh Iyer Ready to Take on Leadership Role
In a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo, Iyer expressed his confidence in leading a team, emphasizing that leadership is more than just a title.
“Definitely. I’m ready,” Iyer said.
“I’ve always believed captaincy is just a tag. Leadership is the bigger responsibility.”
He further explained that even without an official captaincy title, a player can still be a leader by setting an example and influencing the dressing room.
“You don’t necessarily need the tag of a captain to be a leader in your dressing room. You need to be a good role model.”
Iyer, who plays for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket, added that while he isn’t the official captain of his state team, his opinions are respected and valued.
“If captaincy comes my way, I’ll take it. There’s no reason not to!”
Time Running Out for KKR and Delhi to Make Their Call
With IPL 2025 just weeks away, KKR and Delhi are under pressure to finalize their captains.
Will KKR back a homegrown star like Iyer or go for an experienced international player? Will Delhi surprise everyone with an unexpected pick?
