Rs 20 Crore Increase in Salary Cap? IPL Retention Process Started by BCCI Ahead of Mega Auction
New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly started the process of finalizing the retention policy and other details with a mega Indian Premier League (IPL) auction scheduled later this year ahead of the 2025 season. The Indian cricket board has sought the views of all ten franchises on finalizing the policies for the mega auction, including the number of retentions and the salary cap.
Increase in Player Retentions
As per a report in Cricbuzz, the majority of the ten IPL franchises have asked for an increase in the number of player retentions for the upcoming 2025 season. The demands of the franchises have varied, but most of them are in favor of having more retentions. In the last mega auction in 2021, all teams were allowed to retain a maximum of only 4 players.
However, as per the report, most of the teams have asked for 5-7 retentions this time. One of the franchises has even suggested the number be increased to 8 while one of the teams wants only Right to Match (RTM) options and no retentions allowed at all. The RTM card allows a team to match the highest bid for one of their former players and snatch the player from the team that made the winning bid at the same price.
BCCI’s Feedback Process
Hemang Amin, the interim CEO of BCCI and the COO of IPL, has reached out to the CEOs of all ten franchises and has sought their suggestions and feedback on the retention policy. Apart from the retentions, BCCI has also sought the franchises’ views on increasing the overall salary cap of each team.
Rs 20 Crore Increase in Salary Cap?
The current salary cap of each team stands at Rs 100 crore in the IPL and the BCCI will hold discussions with the team owners regarding an increase in the salary purse which will be valid for the next three years. As per the report, the increase in the salary cap can range between Rs 110 crore to Rs 120 crore, however, an increase of Rs 20 crore straight cannot be ruled out.
If agreed, the Rs 20 crore increase will take the overall salary purse of each team to Rs 120 crore for the next three seasons of the league. The report also claims that BCCI is likely to stick with the Impact Player rule in the IPL despite negative feedback from some of the teams and the coaching staff.
A final decision on all policies related to the upcoming IPL mega auction is likely to be finalized in a meeting between the board members and the owners of all ten teams later this month.(cricket betting sites)
